The school as community
The heart of the school is the commons area. This is a place for Christian community. The students can eat here. They can fellowship here; they can worship here. The school facility itself becomes a living metaphor for community – it is the means by which these students develop their sense of self, family, friendships, and their relationship with God. Out of the heart of the school fl ows more interaction as the commons area transitions to the academic areas. The classrooms will be on two levels, linked by open spaces. This will minimize long corridors and further enhance the feel of close community at the school. Built into the structure of the school are seven accent portals, representing the seven days of creation. This school isn’t just a place to be for four years – it represents the journey each student is on for their whole life. The students pass through “seven days” every single day, as an integral expression of their Christian education.
The building is meant to be not only a 21st century educational facility, but a place that is spiritual and an integral part of building community. That’s why we need everyone from the community to get involved now in order to get this building constructed. David Wilkens, GmB architect for the Building Unity project; parent of Unity student
Finally, this building is meant to express good stewardship of the resources given to the community. We are starting with the educational facility, but geothermal heating and cooling and LEED-certification are all on the table. Future expansion includes a worship/arts auditorium and a spectator gym. We are excited about what God has in store for this new 48th Avenue location and everything His community will bring to it to glorify God in the process.
